Depending on the client, moving companies can deal with absolutely all aspects of a move from Asia to North America, even packing the client’s items for them yet there are still things a client is responsible for and should know.
What the Customer Needs to Do
Having a moving company and freight forwarder alleviates much of the headaches and stress that come with moving. This article discusses more in-depth information about moving companies and freight forwarders. However, the customer has certain obligations that must be filled in order to allow the move and shipment to clear successfully.
The client should properly fill out all documents requested by the moving company, for example an itemized list of belongings being shipped. Documents should be in order and provided when asked for. Most of the time, countries will ask for passport and visa information in the country of residence, as well as proof of departure. At times, a shipment may be put under inspection at customs. Should the client refuse an inspection, customs may withhold services and perhaps even the items.
A declaration of items to follow must be made on the flight home when the client is returning. The declaration must be done at the airport when landing. In most countries, without this declaration made beforehand, retrieving shipment can be impossible.
As well, the client will receive and need to present a Bill of Lading, along with other documents such as passport, proof of citizenship, etc. in the home country at the time of declaring the arrived shipment at the Port. delivery jobs
Tax Exemptions for Personal Shipments
Each country’s laws are different. Some countries may apply customs taxes to all shipments regardless of how long the person has been out of the country. Other countries have laws that stipulate a person must have been out of the country for a certain amount of time, in order to be exempt from paying customs taxes.
Not only does the amount of time absent from the country matter, but as well, some country’s laws stipulate that items must have been in use by the person for a certain amount of time prior to shipping. Some items, depending on the size, automatically fall under certain customs laws, regardless of time lines, such as cars.
When deciding to ship items back home, do research on port and customs laws of the country receiving the shipment. A reputable freight forwarding company, which is the company stationed in the receiving country, will be able to provide a copy of the customs laws.
Be sure to receive all proper instructions from the moving company regarding custom laws and what is needed by the client in the country of residence, as well as receiving this necessary information from the freight forwarder in the home country, where the shipment is going.
